British Telecom plans to eliminate 40,000 jobs and cut £3 billion in costs by 2030, with CEO Allison Kirkby suggesting AI could enable even deeper workforce reductions. "Depending on what we learn from AI...there may be an opportunity for BT to be even smaller by the end of the decade," Kirkby stated, signaling potential structural changes beyond the 55,000 job cuts announced in 2023.
The company continues shedding international assets, having sold its Irish and Italian divisions to focus on UK operations. BT Italia''s €160 million business was divested following accounting scandals that damaged confidence in overseas ventures. A recent reorganization consolidated remaining international operations into a standalone unit.
